DESAL-HEART

A Mechanistic Randomized Controlled Trial of Hypertonic Saline Added to Standardized Intravenous Furosemide for Acute Heart Failure

Full Title:

To determine whether a single infusion of 3% hypertonic saline administered with a standardized dose of intravenous furosemide improves early decongestion compared with standardized furosemide alone in patients hospitalized with acute heart failure.

Objective:

The primary outcome is NT-proBNP measured 24–30 hours after treatment. Secondary outcomes include spot urine sodium concentration, lung ultrasound B-line burden, venous congestion measures, body weight, urine output, fluid balance, diuretic response, and changes in serum electrolytes and kidney function.

Adults hospitalized with acute heart failure requiring intravenous loop diuretic therapy.

Population:

Outcomes:

A single 150 mL infusion of 3% hypertonic saline administered concurrently with a standardized intravenous furosemide dose compared with the identical standardized furosemide dose alone.
